Wyandotte Chickens All Varieties Breed Information

Birds called Wyandotte Chickens are very pretty and come in many colors. This American-bred bird is very famous all over the world, and not just because it’s pretty. They also lay lots of eggs and make great backyard pets.

History of the Wyandotte chickens

This Chicken breed comes from the United States and was named after the “Wend at,” a Native American group. The name was changed by the people who moved there in the 1800s.

People sometimes say and write the word “Wyandotte” as “wine dot” chicken when they shouldn’t. In spite of this, the breed isn’t known to like drinking! It is not okay to give chickens any kind of drink.

Over many years, the breed standard and the wide range of colors and markings were made by crossing several kinds.

Some of these breeds were Pekins, Silver Sebrights, and Silver Spangled Hamburgs.

This breed was first grown in Wisconsin, USA, and its name was Silver Laced. 

1. Silver Laced Wyandotte Chickens

They wanted a “all-rounder” chicken breed, which means it could lay eggs and cook food. This is how the Wyandotte breed came to be.

Wyandotte’s produce 200 eggs a year on average, ranging in colour from light to dark brown.

The original and possibly most exquisite colour of the Wyandotte breed was the Silver Laced Wyandotte. Other colors came later.

People say that this type lays a lot of cream or light brown eggs. You can expect about 4 eggs a week.

When it comes to being broody, they don’t do it often, but some types can (it’s just luck of the draw).

2. Blue Laced Red Wyandotte Chickens

Also, the Blue Laced Red Wyandotte’s unique colour has been getting a lot of attention lately.

They are pretty and make great eggs.

As of now, the American Poultry Association doesn’t accept them, but it’s possible that they will soon.

Some people have the wrong idea about what colour these birds are because they are such a new breed.

You can count on her to lay about four eggs a week all year long. That’s about 200 big brown eggs a year. Wyandotte’s will reach point of lay between 16 and 20 weeks, though this date is more often later than earlier. Wyandotte’s don’t tend to be broody, and they can be hard to breed because they have trouble getting pregnant.

She will happily sit on any eggs you give her, though, when she is broody.

3. Columbian Wyandotte Chickens 

There is no doubt that the Columbian Wyandotte will be the first chicken that someone wants to buy. This bird comes from the US and was first seen in the 1870s.

This chicken dish from the United States first appeared at the Chicago World’s Fair. The name Wyandotte comes from the Native American band Wend at, but the chicken has nothing to do with that group.

The Columbian Wyandotte is thought to have been made by breeding the White Wyandotte and the Barred Plymouth Rock together.

In some cases, their eggs have a pink tint that makes them look beautiful.

 Other eggs are a rich brown color that looks like hot cocoa. Medium-sized eggs are great for making toast in the morning. 

4. White Wyandotte Chickens
